The Monastery of Hozoviotissa in Amorgos is the second oldest in Greece built in 1017 and renovated 1088, built by Alexius Comnenus I. It is literally hanging on the cliff side 300 m above the sea. The monastery was created as an ode (poem) to the Grace of Panagia, known as the Virgin Mary, which is the patron saint of the island. The icon is carried around to all the villages on the island every year.

A perfect blend of nature and the beauty of man’s creation, the monastery symbolizes man’s tribute to the Holy Mother. Built into the face of a cliff, it provides a breathtaking view of the sparkling blue waters of the Aegean Sea. It is with no doubt, the pride of Amorgos,

Inlägget <a

Good news for the producers of Amorgos fava, as this particular local product is awaiting final approval by the European Commission to be registered as a Protected Geographic Product*.

Fava is cheap and healthy Greek “farmer food” made of yellow peas, Pisum sativum. It’s full of minerals and also called the “poor meat” as it is rich in protein and can replace meat.

Fava is an endemic legume adapted to the local clime of Cyclades, with its dry and warm summers and mild winters. All agricultural work is done by hand, and the harvest is in May.

<br

The Amorgians cook it slowly and patiently, only in water, letting it bring an unusual sweetness. Season it with slices of onion, lemon juice and olive oil. For the recipe, <a

The island is a magic place during Easter, some customs are still celebrated from the Byzantine period. On the Good Friday the scent of sage and oregano will be all over the island, spread spread on the streets which is light up by candles when the “Epitaphios” passes. On Easter Saturday at midnight the liturgy ends with blessing and lightning of the “lambadas” (Easter candles) then everyone go outside to enjoy the fantastic fireworks. The fast breaks in the night with the traditional soap “Mageritsa”. The Easter Sunday brings a special sense of Amorgos when everyone has the goat turning over the fire. In the afternoon people are gathering in the village for the burning of Judas and the children are participating in traditional games.

<img

On Amorgos, the region of Aegiali has retained its name since the Ancient time, for 2,800 years. There are still many ancient customs kept alive in daily social life, such as the ancient games played in the two old villages, Langada and Tholaria.

The Tholarians play the ancient form of bowling, which the locals call “ball”. The “balls” consist of 9 wooden poles, which are chipped on top and take the form of a bottle. Eight of them are about twice the size of a bottle of beer while the ninth is smaller, about half of the others.

The “balls” are placed in a regular quadrilateral form. Each player tries, from a specified distance, to knock down as many “balls” as possible. For each “ball” someone knocks down he gets one point. The exception is the smallest, which is placed in the middle and is scored 9 points. It’s the so-called “Nine”.

The balls need to be very durable because of the hard blows they receive. The best are made of yarn or fig root, which makes them hard but still they retain their elasticity.
The “balls” are played by two teams. Each group can have up to 4 people. The game ends when a team achieves exactly 31 points.

In Langada the “balls” players are divided into two groups, consisting of two or three players, so-called “balladers”. Each player has at his disposal two wooden balls of different dimensions and weights, depending on his choice.

The reference point of the game is a small ball, called the “cost”. The team which throw at least one ball closest to the “cost” wins the lot. The more balls one team has near the “cost” the more points they earn. The game ends when a team gains exactly 21 points.

The “balladers” of Langada give names to their balls, in the old times they used to give them the nickname of the best players. The prize for the winning team used to be doughnuts, today it is raki with meze.

Published in Explore Nature Magazine (No 5)

Inlägget <a
